What to expect…

When a LMSW is under supervision, expect meet with one’s clinical supervisor for 4 hours per month. In my program, all sessions are typically online using Zoom, yet I am open to in-person sessions upon request. You can live anywhere in Texas and participate in supervision, and usually my sessions two-hour group or individual session twice per month. Most LMSWs complete the required 100 total hours of clinical supervision within 24 months, yet there’s no longer a maximum time limit for completing supervision. In order to be in supervision, you must be employed and work at least 30 hours per week to be eligible to complete the supervision process in, or close to, 24 months. There is a possibility there might be gaps in supervision due to employment breaks or job transitions.

When I began supervision towards my LCSW, I did a combination of individual and groups sessions. I enjoyed the group setting as it provided feedback from peers, and insight into different fields and settings.

Does my current job qualify as a clinical social work position?

I was faced with this challenge when I started clinical supervision. The board has determined that if you assess, diagnose and treat mental health or substance abuse issues using DSM-5-TR criteria for at least four hours per week, you are eligible for LCSW supervision. Don’t be overly concerned about making a formal diagnosis. In many settings, it might be physicians, psychiatrists, or independently licensed mental health professionals who diagnose clients or patients. If you’re using a diagnostic skill set and/or screening tools when working with clients or patients, you are likely fulfilling this requirement.

Previously, I have supervised LMSWs employed by behavioral health hospitals and outpatient programs, medical hospitals, in-patient programs, and detention centers, yet one might work in hospice, schools, dialysis clinics, military bases, the VA, CPS, non-profits, insurance companies, EAP programs, private practices, and even police departments and prisons. As long as you have direct client or patient interactions and utilize clinical social work skills, you probably meet clinical supervision criteria.

What to expect in a group setting?

Group members are expected to come prepared to present cases or ethical dilemmas they encounter at work and receive feedback. We will increase clinical competency with utilizing the DSM-5-TR, different therapeutic modalities, medications, and how to prepare for the LCSW exam. I enjoy being a therapist, and I want my supervisees to grow as clinicians and also be able to pass the exam. Yet some supervisees have choosen to pursue directorial or management roles after completing supervision. Macro issues and policy changes are often impact our individual clients and patients, and it's important explore macro and mezzo issues within the clinical discussion.
